Summer Internship

I know it’s too late to start off with my experience in Sony India Software Centre as a summer intern but yes I’ll stick to the old saying, “Better late than never”.

SISC Bangalore had announced in our college during the campus recruitment last year that it would take interns for the current year. Many people from ECE, CP and IT had applied for it. I didn’t do the same, phantom as I was. I thought I would get an internship very easily. But all my hopes were shattered when I was in the middle of nowhere still hunting for internships during the last month of the 6th semester. That was the time I received a mail from our Placement Coordinator that students interested may still apply for the internship. It was like rain in the desert although I had no hopes of getting through. We waited for the telephonic interviews but none of us got any call. Finally, only 6 students were shortlisted on the basis of their CGPA and I was lucky enough to sneak through in the 5th position. Thanks to all the 9 pointers and toppers for not applying. *bows*. I received my first call in the middle of my end term examinations and it was not even decent. Some basic questions on C, Data Structures, Java and my projects were asked and I failed to do my best. But to my surprise, I qualified for the next round and received another call on 5th May (yes, I can recall the date:-) ). The interviewer grilled me like anything on the things mentioned in my Resume. Again, I was very lucky to be selected for the internship in Sony India Software Centre – Bangalore. To give me company were Aditya Bikram Pattnaik and Paridhi Singhal from our college.

When we reached SISC, we were amazed to see the ambience out there. The reception at Sony was indeed awesome. We were waiting along with two other interns from NIT Silchar. After sometime, we were introduced to our respective mentors. Rahul Gupta, Technical Lead was my lead mentor. I was assigned the project ‘ORMC Travel Automation’ along with Priyanka Murthy (Primary Mentor) and Siddharth Borah (Intern from NIT Silchar). We were briefed about the project and task we had to do. We somehow managed to complete the project in the given period of 54 days. More than the project, it was the wonderful memories at Bangalore that we still cherish today.

Description:
Semag is a gaming application targetting all age-groups, mainly the youth and comes with 3 games
- Snake, Meteors and Fire.
With top scores and with new and never before played games like Meteors and Fire makes this
application more addictive.
As we enter the main menu, we see the three games on our screen. We can select any one of the
three games to get to the games menu screen.
You will now see 5 options for each game.
1 ) Start game – This starts the game and you can start playing it.
2 ) Instructions – This shows the instructions on how to play the game.
3 ) Top Score – This displays the top score for the game.
4 ) Main Menu – This gets you back to the game menu where you can choose the game you want to
play.
5 ) Exit – This exits the application.
Now in the Main Menu we have 4 options – 3 Games and Exit.
Game 1 – SNAKE:
This game is all the all favourite snake. The first level is without any boundary and allows the snake
to move through the walls.
Each time you collect the circle you score 10 points and the snake elongates by 1 unit. As soon as
you collect 10 of these [ Score 100 points ],
the snake comes back to its original size and the level increases. As the level increases brick walls
start coming on the wall.
The snake dies if it touches itself or collides with the walls and the game is over.
If you have scored the highest, you are taken to a screen where you can enter your name to save the
high score.

Game 2 – METEORS:
This game being first of its kind, is an application where we represent the earth and we have to save
the earth from the falling meteors and the asteroids. There are also special powerups which fall with
the meteors.
You have 3 lives in the beginning.
Each time you dodge a meteor you score 10 points.
Each time you take the 50 point power up, your score increases by 50 points.
Each time you take the 100 point power up, your score increases by 100 points.
Each time you take the life power up, your number of lives increases by one.
Each time you collide with an asteroid [ the stone like structure ] you loose 10 points.
Each time you take a DIE or collide with a meteor, you lose a life.
Remember – you will only be notified that you have lost a life when you collide with a meteor and
not with the DIE power up.
The game is over when you lose all your lives.
Each time you score points your level increases by one and the number of meteors increases
After the game is over, if you have top scored, you are taken to a screen where you get to enter your
name to save high score.
Game 3 – FIRE:
This game is where you have to shoot the enemy and dodge its bullets.
You have 2 lives in the beginning.
Each time you kill the enemy, your level increases and the number of enemies increases by one.
As you play and you reach level 10, we reach a bonus level, where the enemy is just moving from
left to right and we have to shoot it 5 times.
As soon as you do that, you reach the next stage where the enemy changes and shoots more
frequently.
Each time you shoot the enemy you score points.
If the enemy bullet hits you, you die and get notified that you have lost a life.
Once the game is over, if you have top scored you are taken to a screen where you get to enter your
name to save the high score.

Unique Selling Proposition (USP) :
Its a 3 in 1 game with Meteors being one of its first kind. With top scores and with new and never
before played games like Meteors and Fire makes this game more addictive. It has a very good
graphical appeal with user friendly interface.
Areas of application:
It targets all age-groups espcially the youth.
Type of device : Default colour phone.

Even Semester

The magic of even semester has begun and it shouts in my ears – “The worst is yet to come”.

Sitting idle for God knows how many weeks.
Hunting for internships with no responses from the other side.
Sleeping for 12-14 hours every day.
Above all, don’t know what to do after graduation.

This was a crap that I made long back; 15th of July,2009 to be precise. Actually, I don’t have any games (except the ones that came bundled with the Ubuntu installation) in my laptop. I saw this kinda game in my friend’s laptop and I wanted to play the same. I came back to my room and started thinking about it…..The bottomline – JavaFX was the solution!!

I booted my laptop and started the NetBeans IDE.
Time: 11:41:25 PM – NetBeans saves it by default.
Place: The bed @ 6/85 that served me well for good 60 days @ Summers
I did some kinda crap for 2 hours and I was done with the game.
What you need to do it just save yourself (the blue ball) from colliding with others (the red ones). Red balls keep pouring in from one of the sides. Although you’ll be up right from start, you’ll find it difficult to survive for long!!

I don’t know how long will this continue. Is this an infinite for-loop or any ******* thing having endless iterations?? God knows why am I doing this? This time I had chalked out a things-to-do list on a piece of paper and was determined to complete the same but haven’t been able to accomplish even a single percent of that. Forget about other things, I had picked up only one thing from that list and couldn’t even do that. I have become more of a nocturnal idiotic fool wasting my time in stupid gossips, chatting and doing of sorts of nonsense to my latest addiction, Facebook. Had wasted 50 days for that chickenpox thing (20 days in bed-rest and the next 30 days requesting teachers to take my re-examination). Wish everything was open source; had it been so, I would have deleted chickenpox from the every possible source code……ehhh? enough…..the next 40 days days (from 1st June till date) was a sheer waste of time. I didn’t go home for some reasons known to me . Actually, I didn’t want to…..I had other plans but failed to utilize the time. Anyways, it’s no use wasting my time by dreaming about the past. I need to sit and relax and then get back to some serious work.

I m loving it…..it's not McDonald's this time!!

After implementing my first module in Nigraha, I was really committed to CakePHP . The model-view-controller indeed helped in organizing the code in a better fashion. Although I’m a beginner and not well-versed with CakePHP, I can only fantasy the wonders that I can do after working on it for some more time….
